In the casting industry, safety requirements for every position are extremely strict. However, some foundries do not enforce safety regulations rigorously. Today, let's take a few examples to popularize the safety requirements for different positions in the casting industry.
Different Positions in the Casting Industry:Safety Requirements

Casters

  1. Only those who have received specialized training in casting, passed the examination, and obtained an operation certificate can operate independently.
  1. During operation, wear protective equipment properly. It is prohibited to expose the chest and arms or walk barefoot.
  1. In places equipped with ventilation equipment, start the ventilation equipment before work.
  1. The workplace should be kept clean and tidy. Sand boxes, molds, tools, etc. shall not be stacked randomly, and the passageways should be kept unobstructed.
  1. Waste materials and garbage should be dumped in designated areas and removed regularly. The voltage of the portable lamps used shall not exceed 36V.
  1. When using equipment or cranes, comply with their safety technical operation procedures.

Molders

  1. Before work, tidy up the workplace and check whether the tools used (such as sand boxes, screws, bottom plates, etc.) are in good condition. If cracks or damages are found, they must be repaired before use.
  1. Stack sand boxes neatly and stably, not too high. Larger boxes should be placed at the bottom and smaller ones on top.
  1. It is strictly prohibited to stand under the lifted sand molds. If it is necessary to work under them, they must be firmly supported by frames. Do not stand on the lifted sand molds to find balance.
  1. When turning over the sand box, the sand box must be lifted horizontally and there should be no obstacles around. Unrelated personnel must stay away, and the operator should not be close to the sand box either. Use supports when turning over large sand boxes.
  1. When placing the sand box on the template, do not lift and support the bottom of the sand box by hand. When buckling the box, lift it horizontally and steadily. When lifting and supporting, stand on both sides of the sand box.
  1. When using compressed air to blow the sand in the sand mold or clay mold, the pressure shall not exceed 8kg/c㎡.
  1. Place the sand molds neatly and leave a certain passageway for easy casting. The casting positions must be in the same direction and marked.
  1. For large sand molds or bottom - pit molding, air vents must be left around and at the bottom to allow the gas in the mold to be discharged smoothly during casting.
  1. Have a dedicated person to direct when turning over and buckling the boxes.
  1. After closing the box, smear the box seams well, press the box as required, or tighten it with screws. At the same time, prevent the burrs at the box mouth from hurting people, and check whether the pouring risers have sand and whether the air holes are unobstructed.
  1. Before getting off work, clean up the debris such as iron filings in the workplace.

Pourers

  1. Remove all obstacles from the passageways and work areas.
  1. Check whether the molten iron ladle is dried, and whether the bottom, ears, bars, and handles of the ladle are safe and reliable, and whether the rotating parts are flexible. It is prohibited to use an undried molten iron ladle.
  1. All tools in contact with molten iron must be pre - heated to above 500℃ before use, otherwise, they are not allowed to be used.
  1. The molten iron shall not exceed 80% of the volume of the molten iron ladle. Carry the ladle steadily and walk slowly with consistent steps to prevent the molten iron from splashing and hurting people.
  1. Before hoisting the molten iron with a crane, check whether the hook and chain are reliable. When hoisting, the chain shall not be knotted. There should be a dedicated person to follow the molten iron ladle, and there should be no idle personnel on the passing route.
  1. Strictly implement the "Six No - Castings":
① Do not cast when the temperature of the molten iron is not enough;
② Do not cast when the grade of the molten iron is incorrect;
③ Do not cast without slag - blocking;
④ Do not cast when the sand box is not dry;
⑤ Do not cast without placing the external pouring gate;
⑥ Do not cast when the molten iron is insufficient.
  1. Casting should be accurate and stable. Do not pour molten iron into the sand box from the riser or look at the molten iron.
  1. When the molten iron is poured into the sand mold, ignite the exhaust gas from the steam holes, risers, and box seams at any time to prevent toxic gas and molten iron splashing from hurting people.
  1. Pour the remaining molten iron into the prepared iron molds or sand pits, and do not pour it on the sand piles or the ground to prevent the molten iron from exploding and hurting people. The molten iron flowing on the ground due to fire running or other reasons shall not be covered with sand before it solidifies, and it should be removed in time after solidification.
  1. Check the safety and reliability of all equipment before use, and clean them up after use.

Sand Cleaners

  1. Check the safety and reliability of the equipment and tools used. When cleaning sand, pay attention to keep a proper distance from others. Do not stand in front of the sand - cleaning area.
  1. When turning over the castings for sand cleaning, pay attention to the people around. When large castings need to be erected by a crane, they must be placed flat and padded firmly. Do not chisel burrs while the casting is being hoisted.
  1. The stacked cleaned castings shall not be too high to prevent collapse and injury.
  1. When chiseling burrs, do not stand in front. When using a crane, must check the lifting appliances. The chain shall not be knotted, the hanging shall be firm, and do not stand under the hoisted castings.
  1. When using a grinding wheel to grind the burrs of castings, strictly comply with its safety technical operation procedures. After the work is completed, clean up the site and organize the tools and equipment.

Metal Melters

  1. Before work, carefully check the machinery, electrical appliances, water - cooling, and hydraulic (or pneumatic) systems under your jurisdiction. Start smelting only after confirming they are normal.
  1. During work, wear work clothes, protective shoes, protective goggles, protective caps, etc. properly. Do not work bare - chested to prevent burns.
  1. Keep the furnace front and the workplace clean and tidy at all times. Place all kinds of materials and tools in designated locations.
  1. The furnace charge should be dry and inspected by a dedicated person. It is strictly prohibited to put explosive items (such as bullets, detonators, etc.), sealed containers, and furnace charges with water (or snow) into the furnace.
  1. The sample spoons, sample molds, and scraping plates should be kept dry and clean. Pour the remaining molten liquid in a dry place or a dry ingot mold.
  1. When using a traveling crane, first check whether the chains, steel wire ropes, hooks, scales, etc. are firm. If not, prohibit hoisting. When hoisting, operate according to the "Safety Technical Operation Procedures for Crane Operators".
  1. Before starting the furnace, remove all obstacles around the furnace pit. There should be no explosive items within 5m, and there should be no water accumulation on the furnace pit and the ground in front of the furnace.
  1. When adding powdered and bulk materials, feed the materials sideways to prevent splashing and injury.
  1. Before discharging the molten metal, the tools and pouring ladles used must be baked dry. The pouring ladle must be placed correctly and stably. It is prohibited to contact the molten liquid with cold and wet iron rods and tools to prevent splashing and injury.

  1. When starting the furnace, stick to your post according to the division of labor and do not leave your post without permission.
